Cinderella Man
Well, we've got to catch up on those Oscar movies sometime! This past weekend was time to watch
Cinderella Man, a movie about boxing legend Jim Braddock, who fought his way out of some tough spots during the Depression.
We liked it! It's an inspiring movie, along the lines of
Seabiscuit, but most touching was Jim Braddock's dedication to his family and values. Also loved the fact that Braddock was from Jersey -- and the large role that Madison Square Garden played in the movie!
Paul Giamatti as Jim Braddock's agent/coach is fantastic -- hope he wins the Oscar this year!
Voices of Resistance
Thought this anthology might be interesting to check out....I believe it should be available on Amazon.
"Voices of Resistance" is a diverse collection of personal narratives and prose by Muslim women whose experiences and observations are particularly poignant in today's politically and religiously charged environment. The contributors in this anthology hail from Yemen, Iran, Palestine, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Canada, and the United States.Sarah Husain conceptualized this collection as a means of redefining the stereotypical depictions of Muslim women that inundate current western discourse on the Islamic “other.” She seeks to dispel the image of the veil as the age-old symbol of Muslim women's repression and move beyond sterile representations and narrow debates about the contemporary realities of Muslim women. These women engage in discourses concerning their bodies and their communities. A woman mourns the death of a cousin killed in a suicide bombing; a transsexual remembers with fondness the donning of the veil he no longer wears as a Muslim man; a woman confronts sexism and hypocrisy on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia; and the experience of being judged on the basis of skin color and political and religious affiliation that is far more blatant and ubiquitous since the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Bunty and Babli go to Bollywood
For the 3rd round of our
February Foreign Food and Film Fest, we decided to go Bollywood, and watch the 2005 hit
Bunty aur Babli.
Attractions included watching the most famous Bollywood star of all time - Amitabh Bachchan (on whom there was appropriately a
New York Times article on Feb 12th) - and a hit number by 'most beee-yootiful woman in the world' - Aishwarya Rai.
Watching the Big B's son (Abhishek Bachchan) in probably his best role, and the bubbly Babli (Rani Mukherjee) were also a treat.
By the end of the night, the girls were attempting some of Ash's dance moves, and the guys were re-playing Ash's dance number (for the benefit of the girls, of course)! A thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a brain-dead Friday evening.
Snowed Under!
Well, we've officially broken all records and are happily snowed under. Lucky for us this happened on a Sunday...
